Looking forward to adopt/purchase a ferret or couple of ferrets :)

Hi all!

My name is Jose, a biologist and PhD student residing in Umeå. I've always been in love with these little carnivores and since now I have the economic stability as to be able to take care of a ferret pet, I am looking forward adopting/purchasing one or two of them. Does anyone knows of any breeder or ferrets that needs to be re-alocated?

Thanks in advance for any response :)

Hi.

The two breaders that are closest to Umeå that I know of are "Norrskenets illeruppfödning" in Timrå and "Fireflame ferrets" in Ånge. You can find both on Facebook.

Check with them and see if they have any ferrets that needs re-homing or what their breeding plans are for 2021.

A bit further south you also find "Raggarillerns ferretry" in Västerås and "Dashing Ferrets" in Almunge outside Uppsala. There are also some breeder in Stockholm but I don't know much about them.

I don't know from where you are, but just in case you don't know already. Ferrets are not considered cage animals in Sweden. The animal protection law demands that a ferret cage is at least 5 sqm and if you have more than 5 ferrets you need to add an extra sqm per ferret, so most ferret owners in Sweden hold ferrets like indoor cats. Some, if they have the space, dedicate a room for the ferrets.

We don't have any ferrets anymore, but we had ferret proofed our laundry room (10 sqm) so when everyone where in school and at work and we could not keep an eye on our fuzzies, they stayed in the laundry room. We also had an 20 sqm outdoor enclosure so they could enjoy some outdoor activities.

Thanks a lot for the answer!

My plan was, as you said, to have it as an indoor cat. There's no problem with having the little one roaming, and prepare something for when I'm not at home. I have experience handling minks and ferrets so taking care of it is not a problem (after being in contact with minks, ferrets feel like little angels in comparison). I'm from Spain by the way, since you asked :). I didn't know where to ask so I'm really grateful for your quick response and the recommendations given.

De nada
España me gusta! :-)

This forum contains a lot of good information about ferrets in Sweden, though there is a group on Facebook called "Illertokig" which are a bit more active. I think the FB-group has more or less taken over as the main ferret forum in Sweden. Several breeders are present there as well.
